What are implants?
Implants are posts that are fixed in the jaw to replace missing teeth. It is possible to have more than one tooth replaced and this might involve having more than one implant. Implants can also be used to stabilise dentures.
Patients need to have healthy gums, and enough jawbone to support the posts and the replacement teeth. They must also be prepared to maintain good mouth hygiene and visit the dentist regularly.
How do I know that implants would be right for me?
Dr Grant will examine and advise you.
What is the procedure for implanting a tooth?
Implants involve undergoing surgery twice or more over a period of several months.
In the first operation, bone is exposed in the jaw where the tooth is missing. Then a hole is drilled and a metal post is inserted into the bone. This is usually done under a local anaesthetic, but sometimes sedation or a general anaesthetic is used. The gum is then stitched over the post and it's left to heal for several months, until the bone has grown around the post, making it secure.
During the second operation a replacement tooth is mounted on to the implant post. This requires a small cut in the gum to allow the replacement tooth to be fixed permanently.
Can I eat normally after the procedure?
Yes. The implant is placed and needs to stay in the gum for maximum of 6 months before a tooth is put on. We put a temporary tooth on so patients look good and can function normally.

Are there any dangers to my other teeth or gums having an implant?
Less danger to other teeth as only a bridge or a denture is the alternative. A bridge we have to remove a tooth tissue from the adjacent teeth.
How long will the implant last?
The implant is considered permanent. The crown on the implant will not last a life time and will need replaced at some stage.
